Decreasing energy consumption in houses
Bayer MaterialScience in Otterup, Denmark, has helped develop a new unique insulation solution that not only decreases the energy consumption in buildings considerably, but also lowers the price of a house while increasing the living space.
Today, 40 % of the world’s energy consumption is used in buildings. Consequently, new EU building
regulations require new buildings to be more energy-efficient. Many people fear that this will lead
to much more expensive houses.
New creative solution
“New and more energy-efficient houses shouldn’t be more expensive. Instead, we should think much more creatively and find completely new, untraditional and inexpensive solutions when it comes to bringing down our energy consumption. That’s why I came up with the idea of P-Elements. They are easy to use, inexpensive and have a better insulation ability compared to any other building materials that we know of today”. Explained Per Knut Mølstad who has engineered the solution. Per-Knut is founder of Mjøsplast A/S, based near Lillehammer in Norway. The company has cooperated with Bayer MaterialScience for the past 40 years in developing products for the industry.
P-Element
P-Elements are wood/polyurethane building blocks that are developed as a complete modular building system for homes, industrial buildings, schools etc. The “Passive Element” is a heat insulating construction element consisting of two laminate leafs and an insulating core made of polyurethane.
Tenfold energy reduction – benefitting house owners and the environment
“The insulation ability of P-Elements is considerably better compared to all other building materials that we know of today. They are based on polyurethane rigid foam that is known to boast the best heat insulation capacity of all materials commonly sold.” Explained systems house expert Göran Bergström from Bayer MaterialScience. "A typical Norwegian house uses 200 kWh/m2/year, while a passive house built with the P-Element system uses only 15-20 kWh/m2/year. This is a considerable reduction that benefits the environment as well as the house owner”.
The good news doesn’t stop here. Often passive houses have very thick walls. But P-Elements are so thin that you achieve additional living space, equivalent to an extra room. Conventional products can only achieve the same level of heat insulation with walls that are significantly thicker.
